Fighting in the open on behalf of people living with this largely closeted issue also opens up additional mental health conditions.

The American Psychiatric Association in 2013 defined "Hoarding Disorder." Instead, using terms like "HD," "Collecting Behaviors," or "Finders Keepers," may be less stigmatizing and so make it easier for people to talk about what the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments in 2006 referred to as "Hoarding: A Dangerous Secret."

"Chronic disorganization," for people who live with significant clutter, may put their physical, financial and mental health at risk, and strain personal relationships.

With ongoing advocacy trying to get support services for residents and training for care providers in the District to address this potentially serious health issue, this community round table discussion makes a start at opening up the conversation.

The presenter returns from recently attending the 18th Annual Conference on Hoarding and Cluttering in San Fransisco, where she presented the Opening Keynote, "DisordR, The Play," the original, solo show, performed live on stage, and in July, 2018, attended the 6th Annual Hoarding Meeting (part of the International OCD Foundation's 25th Annual Conference) and the Pre-Conference Hoarding trainings.
